Teachers need inspiration! I offer engaging 1-hour talks about my experiences in Shishmaref and the timeless lessons that still relate to teachers' experiences today. Funny, poignant, memorable!
COMING APRIL 2025: Professional development workshops for educators on "The B.E.S.T. Formula ~ How to be Brave, Effective, Self-Caring, and Transformative in Uncertain Times"
My brother (Todd Winslow Piece) and I spoke with Vail Mountain School high school students about our experiences as alumni in 1978 (me) and 1989 (Todd). Things were quite different back then! We also shared about our Alaska book tour, and followed up with a delicious lunch with the kids.
Vail Mountain School was wrapping up their annual fundraiser, which included a book fair organized by The Bookworm bookstore in Edwards (CO). Todd and I had a great time speaking with teachers, parents, students, and community members in support of this great school!
Pine Lake Cellars in West Seattle was my first official book launch with a lovely group of close family and friends. It was a cozy evening with fine wine and snacks, including Pilot Bread crackers and cheese! What a blast.
My first public reading to family, friends, and newcomers, I focused one section on the "kaleidoscope feeling" of being in the Arctic, where I often had the sense of "being one" with something larger than myself.
I practiced reading for Open Mic Night at the Issaquah Train Depot Museum (recording coming soon!) I read from Chapter 1, "The Surprise." Always amazed how many people have aa story about Alaska or dream of having one!
Nome was my first stop in my Alaska book tour in October 2024. My brother, Todd, and I arrived at the start of a crazy storm that upended our desire to get to Shishmaref, but we several people braved the frigid air and high winds to attend my talk in the cozy, very modern Carrie M. McLean Museum.
The last leg of my Alaska Book Tour was in Juneau, where I lived from 1985-1992. It was a wonderful time of reuniting with old friends and making some new ones. The weather was spectacular, allowing for stunning views of show-capped mountains, soaring eagles, spouting whales and pop-up seal sightings.
Book Talk at the Edmonds Sno-Isle Library, January 2025
I had the chance to speak to a small group of book enthusiasts about my memoir, taking advantage of the opportunity to speak more thematically about my experiences: "Who I was, What it was like, and What I learned."
