Flow-State Time

You know that “flow state,” when you are immersed in some activity that has you so fully engaged that time ceases to exist? You feel a part of everything, and everything is a part of you. When this happens during teaching, the hands on the clock zoom by. Extraneous tasks, like making copies or phone calls, fall to the wayside. There is nothing tugging on your sleeve.

Being in the flow is an exquisite feeling. You are “at one with” everything. You, your students, and the task at hand are melded together in a symbiotic dance, an exchange of movement and thought. You feel pulled forward by some force, and don’t seem to have to plan the next step; it just happens.

Being in the flow is you expressing your Highest Self. It’s you and that sweet, yet immensely powerful Life Force Energy coursing through your veins.

It’s what humans are made for: To dream and create and build and tear down and refresh once more. We are wired for continuous cycles of life-changing creativity. This is teaching at its best.

I first learned about the term “flow” from my dear friend Rachael Kessler, author of The Soul of Education: Helping Students Find Connection, Compassion, and Character at School. Rachael introduced me to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s work on the topic, and wrote extensively about how to develop a sense of presence with oneself and with others, which is to say being in presence with wholeness. With the Divine. Rachael was constantly in pursuit of being “in the flow,” always asking “why can’t we experience this exquisite State of Being all of the time?”

For most of my life, I’ve believed that “being in the flow” (or “in the zone”) was impossible to orchestrate; it was something that just showed up, and I had no control over it, whether it was coming or going. Flow was fleeting. Flow was not planned.

Boy, was I wrong.

For the past several years, I’ve been using a particular planner (yes, a planner) that — lo and behold — provides the structure in my days and weeks for flow to occur whenever I want it.

It’s called the Full Focus Planner.

This “planner” is not a place to just keep a long list of what you have to do. The Focus Planner is a SYSTEM that guides you through identifying what’s vital to experience in your life during different “seasons” — intellectual, physical, social, financial, spiritual (and more). Following the system every day and week and month allows you to literally plan Flow-State Time and give yourself permission to engage in that loveliest of human conditions: When you feel productive in a peaceful and joyful and energetic way.

That’s because you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, not according to your never-ending To Do List, but according to what your Higher Self intends for you to contribute at a particular time for the overall good of the universe. It’s a win-win situation.

Flow time could be taking a 15-minute walk around the building or seeking out that one person with whom a conversation would be a good thing. Flow Time is intentional time, focused time, life-giving time.

It’s the kind of time teachers need, for sure.
